In 2006, WikiLeaks launched web site. they committed that every secret document will publish or leak without named the source. they has done their work without problem until 22nd October 2010 when it leaked 391,832 reports ('The Iraq War Logs'), document the war and occupation in Iraq, from 1st January 2004 to 31st December 2009 (except for the months of May 2004 and March 2009) as told by soldiers in the United States Army. The reports detail 109,032 deaths in Iraq, majority of the deaths (66,000, over 60%) of these are civilian deaths. This would be controversial.
Actually, whether WikiLeaks think before act or not, this leak has absolutely made a fatal intervention, not just to U.S. military but matter to national security of U.S.A. But that was another problem. The main problem was their another act. Is it necessary to shared document first with The New York Times, London’s Guardian newspaper and German magazine Der Spiegel before they posted it in their web site. It was obvious that they want to make sure this leak got attention and heavy exposure. Well it was good strategy and it success. But why? Nobody knows. The Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange, only told Der Spiegel, “I enjoy helping people who vulnerable. And I enjoy crushing the bastard”. Who knows what was the meaning to that quote.
Honestly, WikiLeaks has done their job as social media but this leak has explicitly show us that their act had against their commitment about not to name the source. Maybe this leak didn’t named the source directly but still their act clearly broke the ethic code of journalism. And that sucks.
