Can’t become more agree to all the concept of good education can reduce radicalization. But what is the point of all those concept if nobody applies it well in real life. It’s true that teacher holds the key role – not critical role – to install the concept but what if teacher only teaches and not educates. It’s true that religious education is important but what if it’s only a knowledge not an education. It’s true that school becomes social sphere to counter the radicalization but what if it is not. It’s true that education level helps to create an open-minded person but what if the education itself closes it. In the real life, especially in Indonesia, all those good concept has not applied well and because of that, it created Imam Samudra and there will be more like him.
The main problem of all those not – fully applied concept is clashes of two ideologies of education. William F. O’Neil (2001) in his book “ideologies of education” said there are two main ideology of education – conservative and liberal. The different is their subject focus. Conservative tends to force all the fact without give a chance to criticize and liberal is doing the opposite. In Indonesia the concept is liberal but the application is conservative. To prove it, we just need to observe and count how many schools that focus in exact study. Student today has been constructed as a robot with state of mind: As long as you got nice grade you will be fine. They respect the value and pride no more.
To solve this problem we just need to revise the concept and the application itself. We don't need a teacher but an educator, we don't need religious education but a basic ethic of Indonesia. We need a school not to counter the radicalization but to let in as a concept to study and we don't need an open-minded person according to education level but according to tolerant level. At last we apply all those concepts with liberal ideology of education.
